This consultancy project focused on the integration of a gender perspective into the Special Plan for the Parc Sagunt II logistics area, a major industrial development promoted by the Regional Government of Valencia. The initiative was closely linked to the implementation of a large-scale gigafactory and required adapting existing planning frameworks to new spatial, economic and social conditions.
Led by the UNESCO Chair on Gender in Science, Technology and Innovation at Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, the consultancy aimed to support both technical teams and public decision-makers in embedding gender considerations from the early stages of urban planning. Our work combined a structured, multi-phase methodology. It included the review of planning documents and relevant regulations, meetings with institutional and technical stakeholders, and a gender-sensitive diagnosis of the evolving urban proposal. Based on this analysis, the team developed design recommendations to inform the planning process in real time, ensuring that gender considerations were incorporated throughout.
The study addressed key dimensions such as mobility and accessibility, land-use configuration, safety, and the relationship between productive spaces and everyday life. It also examined structural inequalities in the transport and logistics sector, a highly masculinised field, and explored how planning can contribute to improving women’s participation and working conditions. As a result, the project produced a set of actionable recommendations to promote inclusive, safe and accessible industrial environments, supporting both gender equality and the long-term sustainability of the development.
