This article argues for the need to advance a new generation of gender equality policies in urbanism, building on both the knowledge accumulated and the limitations identified in existing practices across Europe and internationally. Inés Sánchez de Madariaga reviews the main approaches developed so far highlighting their partial and often fragmented impact. While these strategies have introduced important innovations, they have rarely achieved deep, structural transformation within urban policies and institutions. The paper therefore calls for a more integrated and long-term approach, combining transversal and specific measures, strengthening institutional procedures, and ensuring sustained political and technical commitment.
The article also situates this shift within the framework of international agendas such as the Sustainable Development Goals and the New Urban Agenda, which demand more effective gender-sensitive urban policies. At the same time, it introduces the case of the Basque Country as a pioneering example, particularly through the inclusion of gender perspectives in territorial planning guidelines, offering a reference for other administrations.
Overall, the paper highlights the urgency of moving beyond isolated experiences towards comprehensive policies capable of transforming urban governance and practice.
