This essay proposes a look at contemporary urbanism from a broad point of view that addresses different approaches that are not usually considered together in the literature or in professional or institutional practice. And, from this broad viewpoint, the book points out some ways forward, thus contributing to the still necessary effort to rethink urbanism and its professional and institutional practices in the face of the challenges posed by the new urbanized territories, the new plural and decentralized political contexts, the changing roles played by the State and the market, and an increasingly diverse and demanding citizenry. Because matters as important as the conservation of scarce natural resources, the protection of an urban heritage that represents the historical memory of all, the quality of life of people, the efficiency of the economy, and the aesthetic quality of the built environment depend on how we plan, design and build cities and territories.
