Abstract

This manual explains the main gender dimensions and the specific needs of women in the city, and therefore in urban planning. Looking at the daily lives of people in regard to their gender dimensions means looking at urban space from a perspective that goes beyond the aspects derived from economic activities, to also consider, fully and with equal importance, the many tasks that women especially perform in society, for the reproduction and maintenance of life.

Madrid Nuevo Norte is an innovative and ground-breaking project to transversally integrate, from the initial planning and design phases, the realities of people’s daily lives in the city. This manual presents the main aspects that need to be taken into account in urban plans and design from a gender perspective, illustrating each with examples of how they have been addressed in Madrid Nuevo Norte.

To do this, the manual is organised like a deck of cards. Each suit is associated with a significant urban issue relevant from the gender perspective:

  • Residential Areas
  • Public Space
  • Commercial Areas
  • Transport
