Abstract

The manual ‘Planning with a gender perspective. A toolkit to plan smart and sustainable cities and regions’ was developed in response to the implementation of the new Sustainable Land Use and Urban Planning Law (LOTUS) of the Extremadura Region in Spain. As one of the pioneering regulations on spatial planning with regard to mainstreaming gender in both its approach and content, this publication aimed to facilitate the implementation of the LOTUS Law for both professionals and public administrations offering a practical manual to help incorporate gender into the day-to-day planning of the built environment.

In addition to a synthesised and easily comprehensible conceptual and theoretical framework, the manual relates gender to the new law and addresses the territorial and social reality of Extremadura.

The recommendations adopt a very practical approach, grouped by theme and planning scale. A selection of strategically chosen examples of good practice is also provided to illustrate all the scales and issues relevant to the gender perspective.

In addition to an extensive bibliography, the manual includes a basic checklist that allows planners and public administrations to verify whether plans and projects have incorporated the gender perspective in a cross-cutting manner and, therefore, comply with the new law.
