Projects → Gender Equality Plan for the Spanish Council of Architects (CSCAE)

Abstract

This project consisted of the development of a Gender Equality Plan for the Spanish Council of Architects (CSCAE), aimed at promoting gender equality within the architectural profession and its institutional structures. The initiative responds to the need to address persistent gender gaps in representation, career progression and professional recognition in architecture.

Led by the UNESCO Chair on Gender in Science, Technology and Innovation at the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM), the project combined research, data analysis and participatory processes with the contribution of the CSCAE’s Gender Equality Commission. The work began with a comprehensive gender assessment, including the analysis of institutional practices, available data and the identification of key challenges affecting women in the profession.

Based on this diagnosis, the team developed a set of strategic objectives and concrete measures to advance gender equality within CSCAE. These include actions to improve gender balance in decision-making bodies, enhance visibility and recognition of women architects, and integrate gender perspectives into professional practice and institutional policies.

The project also involved consultation and engagement with relevant stakeholders, ensuring that the proposed measures respond to real needs and are aligned with current policy frameworks at national and European levels.

As a result of this work, a structured Gender Equality Plan (GEP) was produced, providing CSCAE with a practical roadmap for implementation and monitoring. The project also led to the publication of the plan, contributing to knowledge transfer and serving as a reference for other professional organisations in the field of architecture.
